Bio

Personal achievements: medals in National championships. Fastest time in the 60mh and 110mh as a 19-year-old ever in the Netherlands.

Meet Job Geerds: the fastest 19-year-old on the 60 ánd 110-meter hurdles (MH) in the Netherlands. Very talented, but more importantly, he understands the concept of putting in the work and what it means to cross his limits. ‘’Knowing when to stop and when to start working.’’

We asked him what made him choose to pursue his talent and what challenges he faced.

Who or what inspired you to become an athlete?

For me, this is Usain Bolt. Usain Bolt was a man I looked up to growing up. He was the fastest man and he won practically every race that matters and that is in my eyes what being an athlete is all about.

When did you first realize that you were talented and wanted to be an athlete? What made you choose to pursue that talent?

As a child, I always wanted to run to school. My mother rode a bicycle and I never wanted to climb on the back, I preferred to run. That's why my mother decided it was a good idea to put me on the running track.

What sports performance are you most proud of?

This winter I ran the fastest 60-meter hurdles a 19-year-old has ever run in the Netherlands. That to me is a good indication that everything is going in the right direction.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge for me was when I was around the age of 13/14 years old. My body wouldn't grow and all the other athletes got bigger and bigger. I didn't stand a chance against these bigger guys. When I finally got bigger too, I got every injury you can think of. In this period of about 4 years, I couldn't train as much as I wanted and everyone made bigger strides than me.

Which sports person is a true warrior (hero) to you?

To this question, I also have to say Usain Bolt.

What do you think is the key to becoming a successful athlete?

I think the key is to keep believing in what's possible and ensure you take good care of your body. The hard training will of course follow.

What was the best advice you were ever given in your sports career?

This was the advice to know when to stop and when to start working. Hard training was never really a problem for me but I never knew when it was time to take a break resulting in a lot of injuries.

Can you describe to us your current training schedule? What do you do in your training that you think is key to your success?

My current training schedule is 6 training days, with 7 different training sessions. On Monday I do weights, Tuesday is sprint training, Wednesday is my day, Thursday is a hurdles session and a strength training at Papendal, Friday is a tempo running day, Saturday a hurdles training and Sunday sprint training. Consistency in training is the key to the successes I've had so far.

What are your favourite exercises and best training tips?

My favourite exercises are the hurdles training, and the best advice I can give is to always make sure you're doing the exercises the right way. Do everything you do consciously so that you can measure your progress.

What kind of diet do you prefer & do you always eat healthy food? How important is this to you as an athlete? Do you use supplements?

I make sure that my basic diet is always good, and I also make sure that I get enough proteins and vitamins. This means that I take vitamin D tablets, as this is the only vitamin I don't have enough of.

What sacrifices you made did you think were the hardest to make in your career in sports? How did you stay motivated?

Frankly, I don't see anything as a heavy sacrifice. I don't have much time to do fun things outside of my training and studies, but for me the sport is fun, so I wouldn't wish it were any different.

If you could choose another sport to be great at, what would it be?

I think that would be boxing. I love boxing and it's a sport where you push your body and mind to the limit.

Do you have a favourite workout song/playlist or mantra (motivational quote)? And is that playlist public?

I like to listen to a motivational playlist of creeds. The songs in it are motivating when you have a tough workout. I also like to listen to Michael Jackson now and then during my workout.

What are your goals for the coming year? Any other interesting plans that we should know about?

My goal for the coming year is to continue to grow and run fast enough to compete in some of the biggest international races.

Where do you picture yourself in 15 years, and what have you accomplished by then? Choose your words wisely, because we’ll hold you to it.

In 15 years I have had a successful career, with hopefully a few medals at the biggest tournaments in the sport. If my body is still fit enough, I will still compete.
